Sergeants get paid corresponding to the GS-6 or GS-7 pay grade while lieutenants earn pay at the GS-7, GS-8, GS-9 levels usually reflecting experience and education. Captains earn pay corresponding to the GS-7-GS-11 pay grade, usually earning pay reflecting previous work history and education.
